Hereford cattle

It appears to me that the Hereford is being neglected as a breed why ? here is an extract from a US ranchers question followed by my reply and reference from the Hereford breed society. I would be interested in seeing your comments

I agree,Having slaughtered many breeds herefords were always the most consistant.Pity the breed does not withstand the harsh conditions found in most parts of this World.

My reply

Below is an extract from the British Hereford society that slightly contradicts what you say. As a butcher and slaughterman I was always impressed by the Herefords placid nature. Most people would not understand this statement but when handling cattle immediately prior to slaughter the gentle nature of cattle is a great factor in ensuring that stress levels are very low and this is a major contribution to the eating properties of the finished carcass.

Extract
There may be something about the soil, water and climate of Herefordshire that has helped to create the unique qualities of this international breed. More important in the development of the world's main beef cattle has been constructive breeding, based on accurate records, maintained for over two centuries.

Herefords will stand out in the arctic snows of Finland, endure the heat of Northern Transvaal, withstand the tough climate and rough grazing of northern Uruguay or the sub-tropical zones of Brazil and continue to thrive.

They are renowned throughout the world for their ability as foraging cattle, their diet consisting mainly of grass and grass products.

RE: Hereford cattle

In my limited experience I have found that Hereford are certainly more mild than some other breeds.

The Fresh Market sells Hereford only. The steaks and everything else is very tasty-better than CAB to me.
