How to Prevent Frost Bite

A visitor asked this morning:

""I am a meat cutter, how do I prevent frost bites on my fingers? The doctor says there is already some nerve damage in my fingers as a result""

My Answer:

"Thank you for asking.   Yes frostbite is something you want to take steps to prevent.    The best advice I can think of is to wear cotton gloves that are available from most supplier when handling cold or frozen products, such as lunch meat or frozen food.  That will help a lot,  but then there is the problem with how to protect from frost bite when you are cutting meat.  I liked to where my cotton gloves when cutting meat as well, but I would pull a pair of those elastic surgical gloves over them to keep them dry.    That always worked for me.   "

What is your advice?

RE: How to Prevent Frost Bite

Here is a great site with photos to help learn about frostbite. http://www.wikihow.com/Treat-Frostbite

"One thing I was told by my uncle who served in the Korean conflict. In very cold temperatures a mitten is much safer to wear than a finger glove. With a finger glove each finger is exposed individually. But with a mitten your fingers are generating body heat touching each other."
