cube steak here in America didn't come into being till 1941 when the first cuber was made. Before this they were pounded with a mallet and the name chicken fried steak was used and a few others lol
A little history here lol
This was bought to America by the German people who settled in Texas from 1844 to 1850. The origin of the Chicken-Fried Steak probably comes from them. As Wiener Schnitzel was a popular German dish that is made from veal, and because veal was never popular in Texas and beef was, the German immigrants probably adapted their popular dish to use the tougher cuts of beef available to them Because it was suppose to have it origin in Texas, It has been called a southern dish
In England they use beef cubes like what we call kabobs, they coat the meat in flour and seasonings. they usally brown meat off in butter. then place it in a baking pan. They saute onions and mushrooms, pour it over the meat. then stir in flour, beef broth, milk, seasonings. until sauce boils. then cover it and bake till done.
Heres a twist... We have a local German group that has a Germanfest every year and they order center cut boneless porkloin chops tenderized dropped in one way then dropped in the opposite way this is their snitzel, The one who orders it ia a retired meatcutter... go figure...
I love Cube Steak, that's how I got my nick name, King of Cubes! I imagine an English style Cube Steak, is just a cube steak. Everything has like 20 different names
