THINGS HAS CHANGE SINCE I START WORK IN MEAT MARKET AT 15 1/2

Grocer pays fines for labor law violations

A ******* grocery store employer has been cited for child labor and overtime violations.

Sharon ******, owner and operator of ******** Grocery, was ordered to pay more than $12,000 in penalties and back wages following an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor.

The labor department said Wednesday that ***** had multiple violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act, or FLSA, by failing to pay overtime to hourly-paid employees and employing three workers younger than 16 during prohibited evening hours and under conditions that violate the law.

The labor department stated that the hazardous orders violations stem from two 16-year-old employees who regularly drove a vehicle to make food deliveries and another 16-year-old employee who disassembled, cleaned and reassembled five power-driven meat processing machines, including a meat grinder and meat slicer.

In regard to the meat department's violation, ***** was in violation by allowing a former 16-year-old employee to clean, disassemble and reassemble a few meat machines.

"I'm not a complete fool," she said. "I would not let those kids operate those machines in the meat market. They just took it apart and washed it."

***** said she also employed her 15-year-old granddaughter to help paint and clean her store, which she was also cited for.

I think kids should be able to work in a meat dept before they turn 16 if they have their parents permission, or if it's their parents store and the parent makes them do it. I knew two people who worked for their dad in meat depts at about 11 years old. Isn't that how the term "cleanup boy" started?

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I say there's nothing wrong with a boy or girl working a real job before and/or after school.

wow lol...First off I've seen some 12 year olds behave and act more responsible the several grown men and women lol...Secondly I completely agree with Larry...Both of my kids have worked with me..My daughter when she was in her late teens (16-17) and my son when he was 13 and as a matter of fact he comes and works at the plant every summer..The first time it was free labor (he received a 5 days suspension from school) I was not about to let him have a lil holiday and my employer was ALL for his free labor/punishment...Mind you I begged for them to give him some nasty job on the kill floor (this they did not do for me lol) but yeah he dropped beef (several men won't do this) packaged...sorted...Really looking forward to havin him again this summer..

when I started our Workers’ Compensation laws weren't to strong back then or our child labor laws. I was one of the 14 year old ones that came and went in my dad's friend butcher shop. i would do odd jobs for him. i remember the first time he let me cube steak, the cuber had no top and i thought i was a real meat man lol
