In praise of or recognition of the under appreciated meat wrappers

I don't know how it works at other markets, but at my last company, meat wrappers had to order everything for the "wall deli". By wall deli, I mean all packaged lunch meat, bacon, hot dogs, etc. I guess because they worked it a lot more than anyone else and knew exactly what we needed. Sounds logical to me. But what isn't logical is the fact that they didn't and still don't get paid properly for it.
In my opinion, if they are ordering for the wall deli 100% of the time, then that makes them a manager of some sort, and if they're a manager, they should be paid like one. Instead, they get less than a journeyman meat cutter. Why not give them the same as a journeyman? (at least).
The thing is, I remember some managers blaming a bad gross on their wrapper who ordered too much wall deli. They'd even sic the supervisor on her.  but I NEVER heard a manager acknowledge that a good gross was partially or greatly due to his fantastic wrapper. I think wrappers who have to order wall deli are under the same pressure as any manager who has to worry about having too much or not enough chicken, beef, ad items, whatever. I always felt sorry for the poor wrappers who had manager worries and responsibilities but got treated like dirt and were never appreciated or compensated properly. How about a large bonus every quarter? Aren't wall deli items super high profit? If so, then the wrapper (do you call them clerks now?) is even more important then I'm saying.
At my current store, the wall deli is grocery dept. I don't even know who works it.
So I say "hats off" to meat wrappers.

I wouldn't have become a meat cutter if I didn't spend 6 months as a wrapper. I learned a lot of cuts wrapping meat.

Did you have to order it too? If so, half of the gross was credit to your hard work.

Every good shop needs a great wrapper. I actually like to wrap. I volunteer to do it on the wrapper's days off. Its fun--but hectic sometimes.
