Back when worked at a store that had a self serve case, I'd be out on the floor working the counter. Sometimes pulling items that were getting old. Then a customer comes by and starts helping him/herself to the same items that I just pulled! They think it's fresher since it's on the rack I'm working.
Does that happen to you? Well, I'm sure it does, but I mean, what do you think about it? Unless it's truly bad, I won't say anything and I'm glad they took it. It saves you work, and you don't have to reduce it. Sometimes I think "it serves them right" because they've been in my way too long and they finally moved, but now I can't take the rack because they are going through it.
lol i know what you mean all to well larry.......they act like your cart of meat is the good stuff that you have been hideing and dont wanna share it with anyone..............it pisses me off when im trying to put stuff up and they start ripping through my cart.......i usually walk away do something else and go back when they are done.............i find they do that in the morning with grinds alot..........ill put fresh stuff out and the grab the old stuff before the reduction sticker goes on..lol
i have been cutting 13 years and always had self serve cases. but i am afraid i have never been so lucky to have someone buy my pulled meat thinking its fresher. if that ever happens to me I ll have this big **** eating grin and say suuure help youself to more. i hate marking down meat or giving it to the deli or worse throwing it away i want to sell it all. so if that ever happens to me I ll be pretty darn happy. but what i do get is plenty of people who will help themselves to the fresher stuff on the rack while i am dragging it around with me. I hate that. they could have asked first...the ones who do ask i say sure go ahead because of course i want to make the customer happy but i wish they would look at the case first. what really irritates me is the ones who ring the bell and ask to see what I have in the cooler...I usually lie and say its the same thing thats in the case no fresher no older. or i just say there is nothing back there. everything I have is in the case now. THEN there are the really BOLD guys who will just go "let me have a look anyway" and they walk back there and start looking around like they own the place...that gets my blood boiling ..does that happen to anyone on here? customers just letting themselves into your department to see what you got hiding in the cooler?
forgot to mention sometimes when they would be going through my fresh rack i would get tired of waiting there could be a whole mob around it i ll just leave it right there in the middle of the floor and go back to work and check on it later..it would usually be empty then.

fdarn, I don't think I've ever seen a customer walk into the meat dept and start looking around the way you describe. I'd demand they leave. Tell them it's a safety issue. It is a safety issue.
I think you should have a pan of old meat on your rack now and then and see what happens to it.
it has happened to me more than a few times...its kind of small town store thing where everyone knows everyone and everyone thinks its cool even when its not. it neverhappened when i was working for giant the big corporation but it would happen at save a lot, the spartan stores, and the IGAs it always pissed me off i would be like who does this guy think he is. everyone would just shrug and go oh well
i always been kind of ascope up the old meat in my arms and carry it away kind of guy i ll try using a pan and set it up neatly so it looks like it was just cut and just sit the pan there and see what happens. thats an idea

I was into walmart the other day and a customer was going through the poor old meat clerk's rack of gas-packed burger looking for the "fresh stuff" as if they actually ground it there. That was the funniest thing I've seen this year!
hey that reminds me do we have any members who are walmart meat clerks? I bet they got some great stories about customers requests and stuff like that. come on out of allll the walmart supercenters in the world there has to be at least one walmart meat clerk in here. come out introduce yourself lets shoot the bull. i have always been curious about how walmart and stores with case ready meat departments handle things.
The local Wal-Mart Supercenters here (YEAH we have 2 within 10 miles of each other, 2 too many if you ask me) only have prepack. I was in with one of my cutters checking out the product and prices (in street clothes) at the newest one and within 7 minutes we had the market "manager" accompanied by 2 security guards asking us if we worked for Wal-Mart and if not, who did we work for. It was bizarre. We left pretty quick after that. Their product is crap anyway. Just like every other product in the store. That's my opinion!

That's funny that they recognized you as grocery or meat people and confronted you.
there aint **** they can do to make u leave next time buy a pop then ud be a customer and tell the rent a cops to piss off
That's pretty much what we did. Except minus buying anything. I'm not about to give 1 single cent to Wal-Mart. I'd feel better giving money to a drunk bum than Wal-Mart.
i am afraid ia m going to offend someone here who actually works in a walmart meat dept. but i have been wanting to ask are you guys really meat cutters or stock boys? just wondering. and what do you do when a customer comes in during the holiday season and asks for a crown roast enough for 20 people do you go "oh we don't do that here we aren't meat cutters go to a grocery store" or what? just curious really don't want to make anyone mad.

They're are no practicing meat cutters functioning as a meat cutter in a Wal-Mart. In a Sam's Club, that's different. They actually cut meat in a Sam's Club.
i have only been in one sam's club before and I actually thought they had a pretty nice meat department. what i don't get is why they have a walmart supercenter then a sam's club across the street. i swear god thats what they have in charlottesville, Va. i guess it makes sence to some people but to me its like competing with yourself.

I know a Sams meatcutter. They dont even grind their trim, they just THROW IT AWAY!!! I was shocked to hear that.
I know a Sam's cutter and he told me they have to throw ALL product that reaches it's code date away, even bacon. He told be you can get fired by selling it cheap or giving it away. That's just dumb.
will they get fired for taking home discarded meat? think of all the perfectly good meat and lunch meats walmart is wasting. There are starving kids all over the world and walmart just dumps it in the trash.

At my old job, we had signs on the wall saying "the taking or consuming of spoils is considered theft and grounds for termination". One thing I hated to throw away was the Nestle Crunch candy bar in Oscar Mayer "Lunchabels" that were outdated. I ate a lot of those candy bars when we had to throw away the OM Lunchables.
yeah I do that with the lunchables too. I like the juice packs best. so its considered theft if you consume or take it from the store...what do they call it if you dig it out of the dumpster?
that call it dumpster diving and if someone wanted it bad enough id give i to them..lol.............................but there whole point to it is u shouldnt be throwing nothing away it should be reduced before it goes bad..........like my package counter i reduce that stuff 30 % 4 or 5 days before it expires
