I have two Hobart Model 5801 (one is a 5801-D or something, but it uses the same parts) that have both developed a little bit of wiggle in the lower wheel shaft, causing the blade to slip forward and hit the edge of the wheel (and in one instance cutting through the wheel and scaring the hell out of me in the process). Assuming my diagnosis is correct, fixing both of these saws should be as easy as replacing this Assembly (http://www.onesharpstore.com/catalog/item/6222161/6334539.htm). However, I'm looking at the old assembly and I can't quite figure out how it's supposed to come apart, nor how I would assemble the new one. A friend suggested that I may need a bearing press to assemble the parts?

Hi Will Before starting, remove lower wheel, grab shaft and check for movement, sometimes it is the inside of the wheel that wears out, causing the wheel to wobble, not the bearings. If the front flange of the wheel is chewed through, you will need to replace the wheel as well. Also check upper wheel and shaft the same way.
Here is a link to Hobart repair manual for early 5801 saws. The process is the same. Read thoroughly before starting https://my.hobartcorp.com/kroger/TechnicalServiceManuals/5801%20Technical%20Manual.pdf pg 29-33 You will need access to a press ( never use a puller or try to hammer out ) 6-8 oz. #140 oil DO NOT RE-USE OLD OIL IN TRANS CASE and lots of patience lol Carefully follow all steps in sequence and change all parts in the kit
TIP #1 If you can lay the saw down on the floor with the motor towards the floor this repair will be a lot easier. Disconnect electric power. Remove all wheels, tables, small parts etc.. before lowering saw. Do not grab any part of the baffle, handle by frame only. have 2 other strong helpers. If you can do this you will not have to fully remove the motor. Big PIA to reinstall. Support head of saw with milk crate ,or other, to stabilize. Just loosen the 3 motor bolts enough to swing the motor and gear out of the way when removing and re installing the lower bearing assembly. Wipe out any oil in case.
TIP #2 Position the large bearing gear the same way you take it off. If you flip it ,you will have to start over. Repair one saw at a time. There are different gears, D or Q, they are not interchangeable.
Tip #3 After bearing assembly is rebuilt, install in trans case, do not tighten cover bolts, and slowly tighten up the motor making sure the gears fit together smoothly. DO NOT FORCE TOGETHER. Turn by hand to check shaft turns smooth. Turn case cover slightly, replace oil, tighten cover. Recheck that the shaft is turning freely. Stand saw up , Reassembly remaining parts.
