Are you allowed to have personal food or drink in your shop?

One thing that makes the job suck for some people in my area is that they aren't allowed to have even a bottle of water or candy bar in the shop. I don't know what's so bad about having a bottle of water hidden on the floor under the table, or in the cooler on the floor under the racks, but if you do, and if someone finds it, I don't know what will happen. I guess it will go in a written report and then 4 supervisors will visit the store and confront everyone about it and the manager won't get his/her bonus that quarter and maybe the world will end too.

So, are you allowed to bring in a bagged lunch and eat in the shop? May you have a bottle of water or cup of coffee? How do you feel about that?

that has always been a chain store thing for me. No food or drink alone in the room at giant.. but we did it anyway. If the inspector was inthe building we just hid it. today i had 2 cups of a coffee and my chicken strips for lunch. I just sit them right by the cuber. If anyone has a problem with that they can kiss my ass.

I mean come on who can finish a cup of coffee in a ten minute break. get real.

policies like this usually separate the chain stores from independents

the chain stores wont alllow anything-mostly because of theft-zero tolerance on everyone

independents are different-they can allow coffee in the meat depts, or water-food i think should be in the breakroom

thousands of people have been caught for stealing thru the years, either on food, or cigarettes thru the years "only to be paid for later"
so, it's easy to have a zero tolerance policy

You can have a personal thermos and drink from the screw on cup/top. You can have a drink in a McDonalds or Starbucks cup. You can have a store brand item form one of their competitors. They couldn't question that. Most stealing is from management and they don't take small things. They take cases of anything/everything. They have ways to delete sales and pocket the cash. I've heard of about 6 different managers getting caught stealing tens of thousands of dollars in cash or merchandise. Managers need to look at themselves if they want to cut down on theft.

been in some that allowed it, some didn't. mostly it was a store manager call. as fdarn says we did it any way, just didn't let cups and stuff pile up so it was so noticeable. kept a ticket tape ito it so we could prove if had to it was paid for.

Rules are put into place for a reason. If you don't like the rules quit and go work somewhere else. yawn

today, I assisted an independent nearby, I dropped in to see how the promotion we put together was working and they were busy! so I jumped in for a few hrs to help
this store gives me all the free coffee I want and the kitchen often cooks for the cutters-the store owners call

Most independents are much more lax than the chain stores

but it also depends if this lax-ness has been abused

when I was manager in a chain store yrs ago-they were strict- we hid our coffees, and even tho radios were outlawed, I loved to have classic rock going- good motivation music.

one morning before the chain store opened, I had ac/dc blasting from a boombox- the meat supervisor was NOT impressed- I told him I'd try to find some lawrence welk for him, he asked-why do you always have to be my number one rebel????

I can have whatever I want in the meatroom whenever I want it. If I buy anything I usually have the receipt with it but they have never questioned me. I would never take anything with out paying for it first and I think they know that. They go the extra mile to keep me happy and I do likewise for them. Seems to be working out pretty well. I have worked places with all the silly rules it really kept moral in the crapper. As for those who say quit and go, I'm with Fdarn...kiss my ass! You can fire me if you think that's in your best interest but I'll quit when I'm damn good and ready thanks anyway.

I love working for an independent now, I can do pretty much whatever, I only have coffee in a cup that has a lid, I dont let anyone have pop cans and open containers, never know when that health inspector can pop in. I know during these crazy meat sales I would starve if I couldnt eat in the cutting room. Im the same about reciepts I tape them right on whatever I bought. But the bigger the place and more people you have to have more rules there are usuallly good reasons for it. :)

RE: Are you allowed to have personal food or drink in your shop?

At my current store, we can eat or drink anything we want. We bring in hamburgers, burritos, pizza, awesome home made foods, any drink we want except of course alcohol. We set it in plain sight. No problem. We bring in bags of food. Enough for everyone. By starting this thread, I'm not complaining. I have it made. It's where I came from 8 years ago that I'm talking about. Also, I do work a few days off each year at the places in question and yes, I break the rules. I hide a bottle of water and candy bar in my tool box and in the 2nd half of my shift, I might bring in a Starbucks item and put in out of sight. I just have to make sure I don't leave it there or else the crew will be in trouble.

I really hate hypocrisy in the workplace. I bet you anything that the people who made these rules have snacks and drinks at their desk.

Most of you old timers know this never became a issue until the chains did that dumb thing about putting store managers over the meat dept. After that it was a store by store thing with me till around 1985 when the State Inspectors issued that rule here in Georgia, After that a lot of chains I worked at would enforce it, some wouldn't as long as no State Man caught anything in the cutting rooms, So we would keep a eye out when we were expecting him, the day we were looking for him we stop period.
Very few times have I ever enforce it in my markets as long as they didn't let the stuff pile up in the way. almost every day of my life I have worked, drink coffee and eat my dinner as I worked even while cutting meat, even in stores where they did enforce it. If I was in a store where they strictly enforced it then we all observed the rule because I didn't want my crew in hot water over bull ****. In the days when we had meat wrappers they use to cook dinner for all of us, what ever they cooked they would cut in pieces for me so I could work and eat as I worked. mmmmmm that just made me think, was I stupid or Passion about my job lol  maybe a little of both ??? lol

Calm down hot shot. I never said my crew or I have never broken any rules like eating or drinking in or around the meat room. If a supervisor does catch someone eating or drinking and decides to write that person up for doing so then the crew or myself have no one else to blame but ourselves. Until you own your own shop and can make your own rules you have to follow the rules put into place by your employer or you may have to face the consequences. If your company lets you eat and drink in the meat room then eat, drink, and be happy but please don't tell me to kiss your ass.

Let me add, to me food & drink is ok with me BUT keep your damn cell out of my market unless it's turned off. With me a cell phone would get you sent home if you talking or texting while you are suppose to be working. you not going to put work off on my other cutters so you can talk or text your woman.

I'm not saying that to you because I don't work for you. We all relate topics to our own experience. I've heard that said a number of times over the years because someone had a problem with a petty rule or nitpicking by a boss. I myself have always had stomach issues and have spent a lot of money trying to figure out why, to no avail. The only thing that seems to keep me feeling well, and the most productive, I might add, is a little food every hour or so usually like  crackers or a banana or something like that will calm the fire in my gut. I was once sent home by a meat manager cause I was caught eating a banana. I think he thought I was going to get on my knees and beg for my job or something (it was the best paying job around) well if you're waiting for that you're gonna be waitin' a long time. No job is worth that. After a couple days when they didn't hear from me the district manager called me in and I explained my situation and he put me in a different store with a very good and reasonable manager. What it boils down to is this... If you have a crew or an individual who is doing an awesome job for you and for the most part plays by the rules, if you're smart your not going to let some child like rule screw it up! Like when you were a kid and the teacher would catch you chewing gum and would stick it on your nose and make you sit there for a while LOL! Like a very good worker  who worked for me in a side business of mine told me... "don't sweat the small stuff".  Very good advice. Every once in a while in the real world you have to bite your tongue or look the other way to keep things running smooth and keep improving. Petty squabbles make things go backword. So if I hear "quit and go somewhere else" in my small corner of the world my response will be the same...kma. Nothing personal.

I'm not sure how serious you are. You put the smiley face, but not a real happy laughing face. A weird one. We've all heard it before "if you don't like it, quit". I wish I had $100.00 off for every time I've heard that. I could probably retire. Maybe you're trying to be funny by mocking those people? I hope that's the case. Sometimes things written don't come across the same as when spoken. We don't hear tone of voice and even the smiley faces don't always help.

In my area, if you quit and go to another company you lose a lot. You lose holiday pay for the first year. You lose vacation time. I have 5 weeks. I'd lose at least 3 of those and it would take more than 10 years to get them back. You lose job security. If you're staying in the same trade, and you have more than 2 years in the same store, you better think about it real good before you quit. Because of what you lose, it's usually a very foolish thing to do.

A lot of these rules happen after you're hired, not before. I was at a certain company for 20 years. 15 years into it, they changed the rules.

You're never going to like 100% of the things about a place or person. You can't just quit every time you don't like something.

If there's a labor dispute or strike, often you'll hear people say "if you don't like it quit". That usually comes from people who want the merchandise cheap as possible and don't care if that means cutting your pay.

I agree with you 100%, but it's two totally different things. Your rule is reasonable. We're talking about an unreasonable rule.

We are not allowed to have any food or drink in the dept. But like you said DONT SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF , thats my moto. When the inspector is in the house the first thing we do is trash the drinks, get rid of the pre cooked bacon thats warming on the heat pad of the manual wrapper and make sure all our sinks are full. I told the store manager that we will always have drinks in the cooler because we work hard and need the fluid . So far he has not made a big deal about it as long as we are on our toes for the inspectors.

I wish the inspectors would be cool and focus on important things instead of our food and drink.

I have found that the stores own inspectors are way tougher than government inspectors. My previous company had people come in regularly in the middle of the night. The had cotton swabs and petri dishes. The take samples and wait and see what grown on the dishes. Also, if you get caught with one bottle of water or soft drink, something terrible will happen.

We eat, We drink, We dance, We sing. It's a freaking party in the meat room!! Thats what everybody in the store where I work thinks, they should all have to spend a week back there and see what really goes on, they would all quit..

When I was a clean up kid, many moons ago, on our later evenings, the headcutter would cook leakers on the wrapping hot plate- we ate sausage, bacon and hot dogs-wrapped in tinfoil, and back then, the bakery girls would put racks in the cooler-full of pastries, and the bakery manager would say -help yourself if you want one

well, at first I was very careful of eating any pastries- the clean up kid before me- got caught smoking a joint in the same cooler , and got fired,

but it was commonplace to eat- while working,,,,though officially it was a policy not to

when I was manager, I always had food at my desk-we worked hard in the cold air, and burned alot of calories

WE ARE NOT ALLOWED ANYTHING BACK THERE EITHER. I DONT MIND I HAVE COFFEE AND DOUNUTS ALMOST EVERY DAY. THE MEAT DEPARTMENT IS IN THE BACK OF THE STORE SO WHEN THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT OR ECO-LAB COME IN BY THE TIME THEY GET BACK TO US WE HAVE ALREADY COUGHT WIND OF THEM BEING THERE AND HIDE EVERYTHING.

Health regulations say we cant have anything, but I don't see whats wrong with a bottle of water in the meat room.....or anything that is in a closed container with a lid, so it doesn't spill....I will drink a cup of coffee in the morning, but I keep it away from where I am cutting, just in case it would spill.....

I take sanitation very seriously in the shop
If you want to drink something I would rather give you a few minutes to head to the breakroom then risk the health department coming in or worse having a customer see you

But in your avatar picture, you're touching the bone in loin strip with your bare hands. What about that?
