if i was going to move to the united states, what are some of the big grocers top rate pay for....meat cutters, and meat managers....i was with atlantic superstore for 9 years and was on top rate of 16.41.....and meat manager top rate was 50,000 a year......
Most markets are union here in San Jose California. I'm in one of the many union markets. Journeyman meat cutters get $21.574 per hour with good medical, dental, and vision benefits. I get 5 weeks vacation. You have to be at the same market for 20 years to get 5 weeks. Managers get over a dollar more. I don't know the exact amount. Some stores have assistant meat managers that get more than a journeyman, but less than a manager. I think there is a bonus program in my store for managers, but they don't talk about it. Safeway stores have a good bonus program for the manager if the entire crew gets great reviews from the secret shoppers. The manager cares more about your secret shopper reviews than he does your work. We have been told by our union reps that we (in Local 5) have the best deal in the country.
This isn't the case in most stores, but where I work, managers gets LOT'S of overtime. 6 days per week and 9 hours days. A manager can doo pretty well where I work. In my area, non union markets pay very poorly, but I don't have the figures.

I wonder what benefits the $30.00 an hour people get and are they union? I was told we have the best union contract. I guess some non union cutters are even better off than us in local 5.
im in a union its the first store i been in thats unionized manager top rate is 19 something i make way over that....and i can work 6 or 7 days a week .....id rather not be in a union....all they do is take 900 a year from me in dues its a joke.....i think if your good at what you do u dont have to worry about losing your job.
Here on the West Coast Canada it depends on who you work for. Safeway is a 2 tiered operation. The old boys make more than the new ones. New ones are meat clerks. My Son is union working for Save-On-Foods and makes Maybe 12$ an hour as a Meat Clerk. I work as a manager for an independant Marketplace IGA and I make 21$ an hour. I most likely could NOT get that wage anywhere else in my area. Most people with my training make from 14$ to Maybe 16$ an hour if they are lucky. I really lucked out :) In Rural or remote areas you can demand as much as 30$ an hour with medical, dental and eye exams

We had two tiered pay rates for wrappers. 3 actually. The 3rd is "clerk" making less money that a 1st or 2nd tiered wrapper. I doubt any old wrappers are left at the high rate which ended in the mid 1980s I think. I think that's one of the worst things we've (union contracts) done to ourselves or our future brothers and sisters. Screwing them over just to assure us of keeping something or getting a few cents raise. Now we have lots of clerks getting lower rates. We're cutting our own throats when we accept two tiered offers. It makes it impossible to quit and go somewhere else. New hires now take a lot longer to get full benefits, and for their first year, no holiday pay. It seems like Safeway likes to fire people and hire new ones in order to not have to pay higher rates, holiday, benefits, etc.
The average rate for meat cutting in Texas is $10-16 an hour. It can be less or more, d.o.e. However, the cost of living is relatively cheap. Managers usually make $50k, and can go higher. Only Kroger has union workers, something I don't care for. If you're good, you can get a job almost anywhere and companies will do what it takes to keep you. I prefer the benefits I have--insurance covers you up to $2000 per year with no deductible, only after you use up your $2k do you pay a deductible. Basic meds are cheap, if not free. I also accrue personal time on top of vacation time. You can carry up to 120 hours (combined) over per year. Basically, you get slightly over 5 hours of personal time per month, but it adds up quickly if you work like you're supposed to. Typically, the company is on a tight labor budget, so you don't have a lot of time to take off. My manager is actually in a bind...he has to take a week's vacation every month for the rest of the year, except November and December where there is no time off. To top that off, you get a 401k that matches of up 6% of pay on a weekly basis, along with profit sharing paid out yearly. It's far better than any public company in Texas. Better yet, if you're promoted to management to another store or are management and transfer, the company pays for your relocation including paying off your lease and the setup of your utilities.
