Yeah, those big box stores are pretty stringent on the selling or consumption of dated product...even if it's still good. I work for a small company (2 stores) right now and am lucky. We work out most product before it reaches it's code date. It either gets reduced or cooked. It actually pains me to throw product away. Day old ground beef gets turned into hamburgers and we sell the hell out of them. I've worked for a couple large corporation box stores and I've seen how they'll just throw out product instead of either reducing it or cooking it. At my store we actually give some close dated product to the local soup kitchens and pantries. It feels good to know you're helping those around you by doing something as simple and smart as not throwing out useable product...even if you're just giving it away. When I worked for Nash-Finch I saw the perishables manager get credit on dented cans and then just throw them in the compactor. I felt ill.
