Retirement Party and Gifts

My sister is retiring later this month. My niece is hosting a party for her, and we plan to attend. My wife mentioned that we should get her a special gift, which to be honest i had not really thought much about. I normally get gifts for co-workers that retire, but don't think i got a gift for my mother or father when they retired. Is it typical to bring gifts for relatives that retire?

With a co-worker that retires, i may never see them again, so the relationship changes for sure.

With my sister, her retirement won't change our relationship. I will still see her a few times a year, and send her a card on her birthday...

Maybe i am overthinking this, just curious is it typical to get gifts for relatives that retire?

RE: Retirement Party and Gifts

Your sister's retirement is an important moment in her life. The gift you choose should match her acceptance of her new status. If she's very happy about her retirement, you should give her a gift that matches her well-deserved retirement. However, if you know that she isn't happy that she has to stop going to her favourite job, you can come up with something creative. This gift should cheer her up and let her know that you understand her feelings. I think it would be enough to give her some kind of gin gift related to drinks. I've always thought of drinks as personal freedom from obligations. If your sister thinks she has nothing to do in retirement now, you can turn it into a joke and tell her that she can finally put her all into herself.
